4 Corners and Iron Horse in Durango

Here in Durango, we’ve found that when it comes to exploring the mountains, two wheels can be just as good, if not better than four. Each year, Durango hosts two popular events for bicycle and motorcycle enthusiasts alike: the Iron Horse Bicycle Classic and the 4 Corners Motorcycle Rally, respectively.

Iron Horse Bicycle Classic

For over a half century, the Iron Horse Bicycle Classic has drawn cyclists from all over the world. The 3 day festival, which is the second longest continuous cycling event in the country, takes place in the springtime, typically around Memorial Day weekend. The origins of the Iron Horse started when two brothers, one a cycling enthusiast and the other a brakeman on the railroad, challenged each other to a race, steam engine vs. bicycle. The bicyclist won, starting a yearly tradition of racing through the mountains in order to beat the train.

The signature race of the Iron Horse event in Durango, the Coca-Cola Road Race, is a grueling challenge for experienced racers. The route stretches 47 miles from Durango to Silverton and features a 5,700’ elevation gain through two 10,000’ passes. During the race, the highway is closed for a limited amount of time, creating an extra time constraint for the racers.

The Coca-Cola Road Race isn’t the only event during the festival however. There are plenty of other races that attract non-competitive riders including:

  • The McDonald’s Citizen Tour, a non-timed, non-competitive event riding a similar route to the Coca-Cola Road Race
  • E-Bike Tour to Silverton, where riders use e-bikes to ride the Iron Horse Classic route
  • Sprite Kids Race, an in-town race for children 2 - 12
  • Subaru MTB Race, where riders use mountain bikes to traverse rugged terrain in this competitive event.

For those wanting to participate but don’t want to ride a bike, there is a Veterans Memorial Train during the main events that “races” the cyclists from Durango to Silverton. This train ride is free to Veterans, Active Duty Members, and Military-affiliated Gold and Blue Star individuals.

4 Corners Motorcycle Rally

If Memorial Day is bicycle season in Durango, then Labor Day is motorcycle season.

The 4 Corners Motorcycle Rally is an annual event that brings together motorcycle riders both new and old to La Planta County and the surrounding region. A large part of the events are typically held in Durango, due to the Harley-Davidson store in town. You’ll also find multiple vendors that you wouldn’t otherwise, including major motorcycle manufacturers such as Royal Enfield, Indian, and BMW showcasing new models and offering free demo rides.

During the rally, there are multiple organized riding events set up throughout the weekend, such as:

  • DS-550 Run - Riding the Million Dollar Highway to Silverton to enjoy lunch, shopping, and more
  • Durango Darlings - Women’s only ride that takes a scenic loop through the mountains around Durango
  • Poker Run - Self-administered ride to multiple venues for a chance at a cash prize

For those wishing to spectate instead of riding, there are multiple races and competitions held throughout the area. Whether it’s the Hill Climb Race, or one of the competitive stunt competitions, you’re sure to find exciting entertainment wherever you go.
