Best Durango Hiking Trails

Durango is and has been a magnet for lovers of the outdoors for many years. One of the many reasons why is the number of great hiking trails in Durango, which grant unparalleled views of the San Juan National Forest.


We’ve listed some of our favorite Durango hiking trails below, from leisurely strolls to more challenging paths.

Rim Trail

  • Length: 2.9 miles
  • Difficulty: Easy to moderate
  • Trail Type: Loop


Rim Trail is close to Gable House Bed and Breakfast and is a popular trail among the community. Part of the Fort Lewis Trail System, Rim Trail loops around Fort Lewis College and offers some great views of the town. This trail is great for beginners as there is only a 415 foot elevation gain and the entirety of the trail is under three miles. There are other connecting trails nearby if you are looking to extend your hike.


To gain access to the trailhead, head to the Chapman Hill parking lot


Animas River Trail

  • Length: 13.7 miles
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Trail Type: Out & Back


If you are looking for a leisurely stroll to take in the sights of a gorgeous river and the surrounding small town, there isn’t a better choice than the Animas River Trail. The trail provides an excellent opportunity for hiking, running, and biking.


This concrete/asphalt trail is great for all ages and for all skill levels. The Animas River Trail serves as a centerpiece of sorts for Durango, offering easy access to many of the parks, trails, and the community recreation center. The public library and downtown Durango is also accessible.


Animas River Trail has only a 341 foot elevation gain and is open all year round. You can access the trailhead near 29th st and 3rd ave.

Animas Mountain Loop

  • Length: ~ 5 miles
  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Trail Type: Loop


The Animas Mountain Loop is one of the most iconic trails in the region, granting breathtaking views of both the Hermosa and Animas valleys. Connecting to a few other trails, The loop itself is well marked and thus easy to follow.


This is a bit rougher of a hike than the first two entries, as there is a more significant elevation gain of 1428 feet. As this is a popular trail, you’ll likely find other hikers, bikers, and rock climbers. 


To reach the trail, go west on 32nd Street and take a right on W 4th. You’ll see a parking lot and trailhead after a short ways.


Note that the trail is closed from December 1st to April 15th.


Colorado Trail at Junction Creek

  • Length: 4.1 miles
  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Trail Type : Out & Back


Colorado Trail at Junction Creek is perhaps one of the most tranquil hikes in Durango. Featuring a 1457 foot elevation gain, this trail is perfect for most skill levels as well as for biking. 


The trail follows Junction Creek, making for a picturesque view during your expedition. The trail itself is fairly tame until you get to a bridge about 2.5 miles in, after which the Junction Creek trail has several steep switchbacks. Eventually, the trail makes its way to Gudy’s rest, giving you an awe-inspiring view of the area.
